Calgary's 2013 Flood

In 2013, flooding in Calgary became (at the time) the most expensive natural disaster in Canadian history while displacing nearly 80,000 people from their homes. As senior communication strategist for the Mayor of Calgary, Daorcey was instrumental in communication leadership and response during the crisis. He worked closely with Mayor Naheed Nenshi and Chief of Staff Chima Nkemdirim to coordinate communication with local and international media and all Calgarians.

The political communication response during this period is a case study in effective, empathetic, and responsive crisis communication. Despite the disaster, this communication led to greater trust in government and a strengthened positive reputation for the mayor.
